Seven Wellness Habits to Adopt Now

By Jessah Robinson, Adv Dip (Nut Med)

Your health is something that should always be a top priority, but if you have let it fall by the wayside or are looking at further ways to boost your health, look no further. Here are 7 wellness habits that can easily be incorporated into your lifestyle:

1. Take Probiotics

There has been a lot of hype recently about the gut microbiome, and for good reason. Your gut microbiome refers to the good and bad bacteria in our gut that impact everything, from our immune system to digestion, and even our mood. The word probiotic, literally means “to promote life”, and probiotics are what allows our good gut bacteria to thrive and multiply. Probiotic foods include sauerkraut, miso, kombucha, kimchi and yoghurt. Alternatively, you may wish to take a daily probiotic in supplement form.

2. Find a workout you enjoy

If you are exercising and it feels like a chore then the chances that you will stick with it are slim. There are so many different and effective ways of exercising that there is no need to do something you don’t enjoy. If you’re tiring of the gym, try a Yoga or boot camp class. If you’re always using weight machines, try using free weights. I love to use an array of cardio machines like the bike, treadmill and stair climber as well as using free weights such as kettle bells, dumbbells, bar bells and body weight exercises. This way I am targeting different areas of my body for a more effective workout, and never get bored from doing the same old routine.

3. Prepare your own meals

Even if it’s only one meal a day, it is one meal that you know exactly what is going into it and it is likely to be healthier than eating out. This is also an act of self-care, as you are putting aside time to do something for yourself. Not to mention, you are likely to save yourself some money as well. With the number of recipes available online these days or even recommended from friends or family, there is no reason why you can’t make the time to prepare your own meals. As Hippocrates famously stated: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”.

4. Give yourself a rest day

That’s right, rest days are actually beneficial and needed. Your body needs to recover and if you are not allowing for proper recovery, this can lead to burnout or even injury. Balance is key and should be applied to exercise as well as diet, social events and finance. However, even on your rest day you might want to go for a relaxing walk or enjoy some stretching.

5. Establish a morning routine

Research has shown that the way to make a habit last is to add it to your morning routine. Snoozing your alarm until you have just enough time to change and then run out the door is not an ideal way to start the day. Establish good sleep hygiene by aiming to get to bed around the same time every night which allows you to get enough quality sleep and wake feeling refreshed and ready to face the day. Ideally, you want to wake up with enough time to fit in some morning stretching or meditation, followed by a nutritious breakfast to set you up for the day ahead.

6. Drink more H20

If there is one thing that you take away from this, make this it, as increasing water intake is great for so many reasons. Drinking adequate water increases your metabolism, hydrates your skin and muscles, aids weight loss, improves digestion, increases energy and focus, prevents muscle cramps, alleviates headaches and encourages the removal of toxins. Invest in a good quality drink bottle and get into the habit of taking it with you everywhere you go. Ensure you are only drinking filtered water.

7. Allow for “me time”

It is important to set aside some time each day to gather your thoughts, and just relax. This could involve doing some deep breathing exercises, meditation or yoga, or simply taking a bath, listening to some relaxing music, or going for a walk. Whatever it involves, by giving yourself a breather it allows you to step back and focus on you. This is an important part of self-care that anyone can benefit from.
